On our most recent radio broadcast, Jeremy Schwartz, WisdomTree’s Director of Research, joined us to discuss WisdomTree’s unique approach to ETFs and the role of emerging market stocks in a well-diversified portfolio.  Currently the fifth largest ETF provider with over $30 billion in assets and 53 ETFs covering asset classes around the world, WisdomTree pioneered fundamentally weighted ETFs.  While many ETF investors are familiar with the more traditional market cap weighted approach where individual holdings are weighted based on their total market value, fundamentally weighted ETFs (which weight holdings based on factors such as cash dividends paid or company earnings) could offer a more objective way to determine a company’s weighting than stock price alone.  On the show, we examined both sides of the debate – one that will only grow louder as more intelligent, or so-called “smart beta”, ETFs proliferate.

In our weekly market update, we continued our discussion on the US debt ceiling debate, examining the potential impact of a government default and outlining the most likely options to resolve this latest political quagmire.  We also offered some thoughts on how investors might cope with the resulting market turmoil.  In our ETF spotlight segment, we delved into the WisdomTree LargeCap Dividend ETF (ticker DLN).  This ETF selects the 300 largest US stocks (by market cap) that pay regular cash dividends and then weights those stocks based on the proportionate share of cash dividends each company is projected to pay over the coming year.  This approach can result in a higher quality tilt than you might find from other dividend focused ETFs simply looking at dividend yield.  Learn more about DLN and other WisdomTree ETFs by visiting etfbuzz.com.

ETFs Making Inroads into 401(k)s

On our most recent radio broadcast, we talked ETFs in 401(k)s and 401(k) rollovers.  With more investors realizing the potential benefits Exchange Traded Funds can offer – things like lower costs, transparency, and diversification – they’re naturally asking the question of “when will ETFs be available in my 401(k)”?  401(k) plans have traditionally been dominated by mutual funds and in particular, actively managed mutual funds.  The good news is that ETFs are making significant inroads into 401(k) plans and there are a number of ETF-focused 401(k) platforms available, several of which we offer at The ETF Store.  If you want to know why we think a low-cost ETF platform offered through a Registered Investment Advisor is a good way to go, we encourage you to watch the PBS documentary “The Retirement Gamble”.  If you have a 401(k) account sitting with an old employer, you can begin taking advantage of ETFs immediately through a 401(k) rollover.

In our weekly market update, we discussed whether you should fret over this week’s government shutdown and we also addressed the upcoming debt ceiling debate.  While these events certainly bear watching, we believe investors would be wise to stay focused on their longer-term investment goals.  As we explained during the flare-up in Syria, it’s critical not to overreact to the headlines of the day and you should also consider how the markets have fared historically in these types of situations.  In our ETF spotlight segment, we highlighted the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (ticker XLK).  If you’re currently selecting individual stocks from a particular sector, ETFs such as XLK can be an easy and low cost way to diversify your sector exposure.  Sector ETFs also offer an efficient way to overweight a particular sector within your portfolio.  Learn more about XLK and other sector ETFs by visiting etfbuzz.com.
