Focus on Asset Allocation & Minimizing Investment Costs

Listen to The ETF Store Show every Tuesday at 9am on ESPN 1510 as we cover everything you need to know about Exchange Traded Funds and the world of investing.

On our most recent radio broadcast, we explained why investors should focus on asset allocation and minimizing investment costs to achieve long-term investing success.  It’s been our observation that too many investors fruitlessly attempt to pick the next hot stock or mutual fund manager instead of building a well-diversified, low cost portfolio comprised of uncorrelated asset classes. With exchange traded funds, or ETFs, investors can use index-based investments to efficiently and cost effectively access a wide range of asset classes around the globe to build an institutional caliber investment portfolio.  During our show, we also examined the different types of investment advisors and brokers vying for your business, how they’re compensated, and the pitfalls that you need to be aware of for each.

In our weekly ETF spotlight segment, we took a look at two different ETFs that might serve as core holdings in a well-diversified portfolio.  The first ETF, ticker VT, is a cheap, one stop shop for broad based global equity exposure.   VT holds approximately 3,700 stocks from around the globe and the index VT tracks represents 98% of the world’s total investible stock market capitalization.  The second ETF, ticker TIP, invests in U.S. Treasury Inflation Protected Securities which can provide some inflation protection for the fixed income portion of your portfolio.  Learn more about both of these ETFs by listening to the full show here.

We Talk ETFs with IndexUniverse’s Matt Hougan

On our most recent radio broadcast, Matt Hougan, Global Head of Editorial and President of ETF Analytics at IndexUniverse, joined us to talk ETFs.  Matt Hougan is a well-respected ETF industry expert who is quoted regularly in publications like the Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, and Investor’s Business Daily.  Matt is also a regular guest on CNBC.  IndexUniverse is one of the leading independent authorities on Exchange Traded Funds and an excellent resource for in-depth information on specific ETFs.  Matt offered his thoughts on the rapid growth in popularity of ETFs as well as his take on the recent ETF “price wars”.  Matt also provided some predictions on the future of the ETF industry, a topic we discussed in detail on last week’s show.

In our weekly market update, we discussed the economic and market impact of Hurricane Sandy and also delved into the most recent jobs report.  We also debated the market reaction to the presidential election and explained why tackling the looming fiscal cliff must be first and foremost on the election winner’s to-do list.  Finally, in our weekly ETF spotlight segment, we examined a municipal bond ETF (ticker MUB) and explained how this is a prime example of the way ETFs can benefit investors.  Listen to the full show here.

On our most recent radio broadcast, we discussed an excellent piece from the Wall Street Journal titled “What ETFs’ Next Act Will Look Like”. The article lays out five predictions for the ETF industry to occur over the next five years. The article states, “exchange-traded funds have transformed investing over the past two decades” and we couldn’t agree more. On the radio show, we explained the growth in the popularity of ETFs and examined each of the five predictions outlined in the article.
